Winter weather damaging to hair

Dec. 13-- It's getting chilly out there -- which means potential damage for your hair.

When the weather turns wintry, hair and scalp dryness and other issues can make the season less than merry.

Sandi Clugston, stylist at Serenity: An Aveda Day Spa & Salon, 1211 S. Harvard Ave., offers some tips to keep hair shiny and strong this season:

1. Scalp matters. Getting dry scalp or dandruff is not a pleasant experience in the winter.

"You need to definitely pay attention to your scalp because it gets dry with heat and if you use styling tools," she said.

She recommends using oil -- jojoba, grapeseed, tea tree or olive -- and rubbing it directly on your scalp. "Put it in and leave it on over night, then shampoo in the morning and then you can take a brush through the hair."

2. Don't over shampoo."I suggest shampooing every other day," Clugston said. "A lot of people don't know why their hair is so dry. It's sometimes from over shampooing." She said to think of shampoo as a cleanser, or even a detergent, and it's meant to clean the hair, but too much can rob the hair of natural oils.

3. Fight static. Static happens in cold weather, usually when your hair, and the air, is dry -- and you are often charged with electricity. "If you have static in your hair, you can put hairspray on a brush and brush it through the hair," she said. "Also, there are some products out there that take care of static, smoothing elixirs and silkening oil treatments used on the hair daily.

4. Heat protection. When using heated styling tools, such as flat irons, the hair can get damaged from too much use, Clugston said. "Use a thermal hair spray -- it helps to protect the hair, and it helps static," she said. And if you're tired of flat ironing that curly mane, you're on trend. "Curly styles are coming back in."

5. Men's hair. Scalp issues are the same for men and women, Clugston said, so the same rules apply. Don't over shampoo, and think about using a product for flyaways. "Use a pomade -- if their hair's dry, put oil on the scalp," she said. "And they also don't have to shampoo as much."
