Polish women have more children in Britain than Poland

Warsaw (dpa) - Polish women living in Britain gave birth to twice
as many children last year as those living in Poland, the daily
Gazeta Prawna reported Wednesday.

Polish women gave birth to nearly 20,000 children in England in
2010, according to British Department of Health statistics - twice as
many as their counterparts living in Poland, the daily said.

Polish women in Britain have an average of 2.5 children, while
Polish women in their native country have 1.4 children on average.

The statistics prove that Polish women want to have children, but
are discouraged by the Polish government's family policies, expert
Krystyna Iglicka said.

Britain is family-friendly and has easy access to things like
childcare, Iglicka added, which makes Polish women feel safe in
having more offspring.

Many Poles migrated to Britain for work after Poland's accession
to the European Union in 2004. Some 515,000 Poles live in the United
Kingdom, according to census figures, while unofficial estimates put
that number up to one million.
