Can you handle 15,000 steps?

Oct. 20--PLYMOUTH -- "15,000 Steps to a Stronger You" is the latest offering at Levels Gym in this village.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, the gym will offer a free walk from its headquarters on the square to the Willard city park -- about seven miles, or 15,000 steps, owner Bruce Tanner said. Subway is catering a free, healthy meal for walkers at the park. Walkers will also get a free T-shirt. You do not have to be a member to walk. If you can't do the full walk, Tanner suggests meeting the group halfway at the Willard Christian Reformed Church, 4180 Ohio 103 S.

"We're just kind of doing it for a fun, last outdoor activity before the winter comes and to show people there's a lot of support for fitness," Tanner said.

Tanner said since his gym opened on Aug. 16, there were only about four days that people didn't sign up for offerings. He has about 80 people just in Zumba classes, which are offered at nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Zumba is a "fusion of Latin and International music that creates a dynamic, exciting and effective fitness system," according to its Web site, www.zumba.com.

Tanner, a 1996 Plymouth High School graduate and village resident, also offers weight management classes, functional training and various exercise equipment. Tanner also gives massages.

Tanner said because his gym is small, comprising about 2,500 square feet, he can offer personal attention to customers.

"If we need to show you (how the equipment works) every time you come in that's what we'd do," he said.

Tanner opened Levels Gym after taking suggestions for months from residents of what type of business they'd like to see open on the square. Out of 383 people who voted, 187 voted for the gym, Tanner said.

How dedicated is Tanner to the gym?

"I work 115 hours a week," he said.

Tanner said he might offer more walks in the spring.
