Salvation Army program outfits kids for school

Aug. 27--The Salvation Army helped supply hundreds of poor kids with a new outfits for school.

More than 300 students received the outfits Thursday for the school year that starts Wednesday.

"It's always nice to have something new that first day," said Monique McCoy, a La Crosse School District parent.

"She's excited to have something new for school. ... I'm able to get a few things but can't afford any extras," McCoy said.

Through the Steppin' Back to School program children from 134 families received a new shirt, slacks or jeans and shoes to make returning to school a little easier.

Sponsors did the shopping for 70 kids, and Target provided gift cards for 30 teens. The Salvation Army staff and volunteers shopped for the remaining children using donations.

"We've had a number of people tell us how much they enjoyed the shopping, especially those that took their own children or grandchildren with them," Connie Houdek, volunteer coordinator, said.

"People seem to recognize the need in this economy, and they've been very generous. It has been heartwarming to be a part of it," Houdek said.

Maj. Curtiss Hartley said many have an emotional connection to having new clothing for the first day of school and can relate to how "sharp" they felt that morning.

"No child shouldn't have that experience," Hartley said. "This is another way for us to help struggling families that have gone on tough times and make sure kids feel as normal as possible."
