State grant brings awareness to childhood obesity

Aug. 25--A state grant from United Healthcare of Upstate is open to Niagara County schools and organizations willing to promote healthier youth lifestyles.

Amie Lopus, who works in public relations for the program, said the grant, called United Health HEROES, supports local programs from schools to nonprofit organizations and local churches that are proactive in the fight against childhood obesity.

"These include anything from healthy cooking programs, to building gardens or setting up dances," Lopus said.

Lopus said applications are being accepted until Oct. 22 online at www.ysa.org/heroes for schools and community organizations with ideas for spreading the word about childhood obesity.

"As more parents, teachers, students and youth leaders work together to raise awareness of the risks associated with childhood obesity, more children have a chance to learn about and adopt healthy habits," said Brian Genalo, director of United Healthcare of Upstate. "We look forward to seeing the creative ideas young people come up with to help fight obesity and encourage healthier living."

Lopus said United Healthcare awards "micro financial grants" from $500 to $1,000 to programs that demonstrate a clear understanding of the health risks associated with childhood obesity.
