WHO chief wants 'frank and critical' review of its handling of swine flu outbreak

GENEVA - The head of the World Health Organization says she wants a "frank and critical" review of its handling of the swine flu pandemic.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan says she hopes the 29 experts at a three-day meeting starting Monday in Geneva can help the global body learn lessons for future global outbreaks. Some critics say WHO's decisions after last year's outbreak were unduly influenced by commercial interests.

The experts' initial findings will be presented to WHO member states in May. A final report will be published next year.

WHO says some 17,700 deaths have been confirmed from swine flu worldwide over the past year.
