Memories important for the elderly

Berlin (dpa) - Memory is important to the elderly, especially
those with mental or physical disabilities that might leave them
feeling weak and helpless.

By looking back on their life's accomplishments, they can regain
some self-confidence, says Christine Sowinski of KDA, the German
Curatorship for Elderly Assistance. Remembering happy times also
boosts satisfaction with life and quality of living.

Memories can also form bridges between the present and past, and
help make sense of life's confusion, says the psychologist. They also
promote interpersonal relations and can even result in tight personal
bonds. In addition memories can provide a good outlet for laughter.

Many older people display notable changes when they focus on
memories, says Sowinski, writing in a KDA magazine. Instead of
remaining fragile and needy, they become more focused and lively,
with more drive and pep. Body language and posture change. The
person remembering will sit up straighter and be more alert, while
the voice gains in volume.
