Oct. 2--Families receiving grocery money through the Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program now can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and soy products.
The federally funded WIC program serves low-income mothers and their young children statewide. Families receive special WIC checks, which are then used to purchase WIC-authorized foods at grocery stores.
The new foods are lower in fat and are replacing some of the juice, milk, cheese and eggs traditionally offered by WIC.
The changes put WIC foods in line with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, according to the California WIC association.
