Come around for a Roundin' Up Cancer festival Friday in the hopes of eliminating the deadly disease.
Organized by Relay For Life of Aiken, proceeds of the event will benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Relay For Life events are held nationwide to raise funds for research by honoring those who battle cancer and those who have lost the fight.
The event starts at 7 p.m. downtown on Bee Lane off The Alley. Hotel Aiken and 100 Laurens will rope off the area for the special occasion.
Live country music provided by Lo Down Brown will complement the hoedown theme.
There is no cover charge, but alcohol will be served for $2.
Event coordinator Todd Stilp said people must be 21 years of age or older to attend.
In 2009, the Relay For Life of Aiken raised $181,000 for the American Cancer Society.
The goal for 2010 is to surpass that number.
This time, the Relay for Life of Aiken co-chairs are Dr. Holly Woltz, founder of Paws for Cancer, and Scott and Vindi McMaster, parents of Carley McMaster, who passed away Dec. 14, from a brain tumor at age 11.
The event will be held rain or shine.
According to the American Cancer Society, 1.4 million new cancer cases were expected to be diagnosed last year. More than 560,000 people were expected to die from it in 2008. It is the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease.
