LEXINGTON, Va., Jul 29, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A U.S. health professional
says college students need to take steps to protect themselves from the H1N1
virus.
Dr. Jane Horton of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., advises
students to make plans to get their flu shots in the fall -- both the normal
seasonal shot and the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available.
"We expect the H1N1 to be a two-shot regimen. That means we'll want to try to
get as many students possible to have all three flu shots," Horton said in a
statement. "It's going to be a logistical challenge."
Horton also recommends students talk to their doctor about recommended
immunizations for young adults and make sure all their vaccinations are up to
date. Students should also check their health insurance -- including whether or
not the prescription drug plan will be honored at pharmacies near school.
A first-aid kit with common, over-the-counter medications, is also advised,
Horton says.
"Students need to know how to self-treat a cold because many have never really
managed that on their own before." Horton said. "They need to know whether or
not to go see a doctor, something that their parents have usually handled for
them."
