Congress eyes tobacco authority for FDA

WASHINGTON, Jun 11, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration would have the authority to regulate tobacco products under
legislation before both houses of Congress, officials say.

Both bills would give the FDA authority over manufacture, marketing and sale of
tobacco products. They are aimed at curbing overall smoking in the United
States, with emphasis on teenage smokers.

Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin, D-Ill., called the move "long overdue."

Senators cleared the way for a final vote on its version of the legislation
Wednesday by cutting off amendments to the bill, the Louisville Courier-Journal
reported.
