Tattoo removal business booming in N.Y.

NEW YORK, May 24, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A New York dermatologist says tattoo
removal procedures have increased in the city despite the struggling U.S.
economy.

Dr. Jeffrey Rand, who founded New York's Tattoo Removal Center, said increased
competition in the job market is the likely cause for the recent increased
interest in tattoo removal services in the city, the New York Post reported
Sunday.

"People can't afford to handicap themselves because of a tattoo in a tight job
market," Rand said. "We're seeing a huge surge right now in people getting rid
of their tattoos."

Mercy College graduate student Mobeen Yasin admitted he was concerned how the
script tattoo around his neck might look to potential employers.

"I can cover it with a collared shirt, but if I turn my head it sticks out," the
22-year-old said of his body art. "I used to idolize rappers with tattoos. Now I
don't want it to hold me back from getting a job."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said more than 45 million people
nationwide have at least one tattoo. Removing such body art means enduring
monthly laser treatments that cost at least $200 for a nearly 2 minute session,
the Post said.
