WASHINGTON, Apr 29, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- U.S. President Obama Wednesday
praised the Bush administration for creating the infrastructure that will allow
the country to respond to the swine flu outbreak.
At his third prime time news conference since assuming office 100 days ago,
Obama said there's no point in closing the border with Mexico in a bid to stem
the spread of the virus.
"It would be akin to closing the barn door after the horses are out," he said,
noting cases already have been reported in the United States.
The most important thing right now, he said, is to treat this outbreak like any
other flu outbreak. Obama praised the 2005 effort to ramp up the nation's
infrastructure to deal with a possible bird flu outbreak. He said actions taken
then will allow his administration to respond quickly now.
