Canada recalls Piller's smoked ham, turkey

OTTAWA, Apr 28, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is
warning against eating Piller's "Taste Better than Bacon" brands of smoked ham
or turkey bacon due to a health risk.

The CFIA and Piller Sausages and Delicatessens Ltd. said the products might be
contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The recalled products were
distributed in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled, but
consumption can result in listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can
cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women,
the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

Consumers with questions can contact the Waterloo, Ontario, company at
519-743-1412 Ext 303.
