Panel urges wider tests on prostate

CHICAGO -- A physicians' group is recommending that men 40 and older be offered a controversial prostate-cancer test that had generally been suggested for men over 50.

The American Urological Association's new guidelines, released yesterday, say the PSA blood test should be offered to men 40 or older who are expected to live at least 10 years.

The screening has come under fire because many prostate tumors are slow-growing and take years to cause harm.
