WASHINGTON, Apr 14, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration says more companies are recalling products containing possibly
tainted pistachio nuts.
The actions follow the recall of thousands of pounds of pistachios by Setton
Farms Inc. of Terra Bella, Calif., because of possible contamination with
salmonella bacteria.
Among recent recalls were various brands of in-shell roasted and salted
pistachios and dry roasted pistachio kernels distributed by Flavor House
Products Inc. and Nutcracker Brands Inc., both part of the Bremner Food Group.
The brands include Shurfine, Stop & Shop, First Choice and Giant.
The FDA said salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in
young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea,
nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with
salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing
more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
Other recalls included:
--Aurora Products Inc.: Pistachio products sold nationally and in Bermuda under
the Aurora Natural-, Whole Foods Market-, Zabars- and Adams Fairacre
Farms-brands.
--The Bezzerides Co.: Art's-brand pistachios distributed nationally with sell-by
dates between May 31 and Dec. 31.
--House of Flavors Inc.: LaSalle and Sedutto brands of pistachios sold in
Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
A FDA list of recalled products, including pistachios, detailing lot numbers,
expiration dates and other identification information is available at
