Stimulus funds for rural clinics available

FAISON, N.C., Apr 1, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden
toured a health clinic in rural North Carolina to show how stimulus funds
benefit the facility, the White House said Wednesday.

Biden and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited Goshen Medical Center in
Faison, one of the community health centers across America that will receive a
total of $2 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, the White
House said in a news release. So far, about $500 million has been distributed.

"Without access to quality and affordable health care, many rural communities
like this one, would have trouble surviving," said Vilsack. "This support is
essential if we are going to fully realize the Obama-Biden administration's goal
of rebuilding and revitalizing rural America."

Biden said community health centers often "are the only health facilities for
miles and miles," calling the stimulus funds "crucial" for meeting health needs
of millions of Americans.
