The following thought came from a just-turned 10-year old fourth-grade student at East Park School.
"My best friend's mom has cancer and I've had diabetes for a yearaEUR^now. That made me think that it would be good to raise some money for people who live with diabetes and cancer every day."
The young girl is Emily Nutter, and it was a year or more ago that she was first diagnosed with diabetes.
The thing she decided to make was bracelets -- bracelets that people could make to honor someone with cancer or diabetes.
When her Boys and Girls Club sponsor, Stacey Spadafore, learned what she was doing, she was most impressed.
"She is making friendship bracelets and plans to sell them through donations," Stacey said. "There is no set price on the bracelets. Just donations."
This act really surprised Stacey.
"When she told me what she was doing, I thought it was amazing," she said.
Stacey said that Emily has been a member of the Boys and Girls Club since she was in kindergarten.
The club director said that the disease is temporarily under control.
"She's very lucky that her mother is a nurse and on top of everything,"aEUR^Stacey said.
"I suggested that she and her friends could start an after-school club and make the bracelets during that time,"aEUR^Stacey said.
Anyone wishing to order a bracelet can contact the Boys and Girls Club at 376-2627. The bracelet colors are blue and pink.
Stacey explained that the East Park Boys and Girls Club has a "pretty strong volunteer program."
"We have about 30 kids from East Fairmont High School and EastaEUR^Fairmont Junior High that help us," she said. "But we do need some volunteer help at our Dunbar and Blackshere School sites.
She said that people wishing to help out at Dunbar could call 304-363-4115 or Blackshere at 304-986-2707.
