Dr. Roshandel will give heart healthy tips

Coronary heart disease prevention, risk factors and warning signs are some of the topics that will be discussed during tonight's health seminar.

Dr. Zia Roshandel, of Blue Ridge Cardiovascular Associates, will provide a presentation in the Culpeper Regional Hospital's dining room starting at 6 p.m.

According to health experts, coronary heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

"So since it's the No. 1 killer in the U.S., you want to fight it with everything you have," Roshandel said Monday afternoon during a telephone interview. "It's important for today's society to become aware of the risk factors because there's something you can do to prevent heart disease."

Roshandel -- a cardiologist who earned his medical degree from Rheinisch Westfalische Tech Hochshule in Aachen, Germany -- has a mission to help people avoid coronary heart disease before it's too late.

He will also address those risk factors that people can control and the ones people can do nothing about like aging and if it's genetic.

Roshandel tells his patients that the risk factors are painless. People should pay close attention to small adjustments regarding blood pressure, he added.

"I have a lot of patients with blood pressures of 140 or 155 and they think that's good," Roshandel told the Star-Exponent last year. "This is not good because every single millimeter can make a difference in your survival."
