Crafters can make something useful for cancer victims


Nov. 10--Crafts for Cancer, a volunteer group that supports the Lake-Sumter Unit of the American Cancer Society, is seeking crafters to make items to be sold at fundraising events. Volunteer crafters meet from 9 to 11 a.m. the first and third Mondays of the month from November through March.

The group meets in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church, 600 S. Grove St., Eustis. Some of the handmade items are given to cancer patients, and others are sold to buy patients personal items, prosthetics and wigs.

Proceeds will benefit cancer patients in Lake and Sumter counties.

*Volunteers are needed for this year's Mount Dora Arts Festival, scheduled for February, to help with tasks such as setting up and breaking down the festival, providing hospitality services, assisting artists and visitors, acting as gallery greeters and sitting at booths.

Volunteer-recruitment meetings are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in the center's gallery, 138 E. Fifth Ave.

Libraries close for holiday

Branches of the Lake County Library System, except for Fruitland Park, are closed Tuesday for Veterans Day. The participating libraries include Astor, Citrus Ridge, Cooper Memorial, East Lake, Helen Lehmann Memorial, Lady Lake, Leesburg, Marianne Beck Memorial, Marion Baysinger Memorial, Paisley, Tavares, Umatilla and W.T. Bland. All branches will reopen Wednesday.

Eustis Memorial Library also will be closed Tuesday.

The Friends of the Fruitland Park Library will host a reception honoring veterans from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 205 W. Berckman St. Light refreshments will be served. Veterans and their families are encouraged to bring any memorabilia to share with others.

Fall bazaar

St. James Episcopal Church, 204 N. Lee St., Leesburg, will have its annual fall bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. Christmas goodies and crafts, herbs, plants, a kids corner and candy will be included.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Takeout is available.

Eat out

American Legion Post 219 will have a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the post, 102 S. Dixie Ave., Fruitland Park. Cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children 10 or younger. Chicken will be available on request.

Club meetings, events

*The Tri-Cities Women's Connection will have a luncheon and Chinese auction from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Eustis Community Center, 601 Northshore Drive.

Lisa Jones, a local singer, will perform. Guest speaker Ann Combs will present "Decisions, Decisions, How Can We Make the Right Decisions?"

Reservations are required and can be made by calling 352-253-0561 by Nov. 17.

*District 3 of the Federation of Manufactured Home Owners of Florida will meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 19 in the clubhouse at Shangri-La by the Lake in Leesburg. From County Road 44, take Harbor Shores Road and follow the signs.

Attorney Scott E. Gordon will talk about Florida Statute 723.

All manufactured-home owners are invited.

*The Golden Triangle Stamp Club will meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at the W.T. Bland Public Library, 1995 N. Donnelly Street, Mount Dora.

The group will meet for its holiday luncheon at noon Dec. 12 at the American Legion Building, 101 S. Bay St., Eustis. Cost is $6.

Sports fans

The Villages Sports Card and Collectible Club will have a show and sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Colony Cottage Recreation Center in The Villages (County Road 466A and Morse Boulevard).

More than 30 exhibitors will sell sports cards, autographed baseballs, photographs, sporting memorabilia and more.

There also will be other collectible clubs from The Villages.

Charity shopping day

Shoppers can save up to 50 percent on purchases Saturday while helping local charities during Belk department stores' Fall Charity Shopping Day.

A $5 ticket that day entitles the holder to merchandise discounts ranging from 20 percent to 50 percent on storewide purchases, excluding cosmetics and fragrances, from 6 to 10 a.m. at any Belk store in the area, organizers said.

Ticketholders whose purchases total at least $5 will have a $5 donation credited to their purchase. They also can register for a chance to win one of four $1,000 shopping sprees at Belk.

All participating charities and schools automatically will be registered to win one of four $1,000 donations.

Belk cardholders will receive double points for purchases made with their credit cards.

Tickets are available through participating charities or at any Belk store.
