ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill., Jul 8, 2008 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The American Academy
of Pediatrics said cholesterol levels should be tested in children with a family
history of high cholesterol or heart disease.
A report, published in the July issue of Pediatrics, said the panel recommends
cholesterol screening for children between the ages of 2 and 10, whose families
have a history of obesity, high blood pressure or diabetes.
"For children who are more than 8 years old and who have high LDL
concentrations, cholesterol-reducing medications should be considered," the AAP
said Monday in a statement. "Younger patients with elevated cholesterol readings
should focus on weight reduction and increased activity while receiving
nutritional counseling."
