Low-calorie Jell-O is the snack of the stars

When it comes to satisfying their sweet tooth and their diets, celebrities are finding comfort in an old dessert.

Jell-O, which has been around long before there was a Beyonce, is popular not only with that glamour girl but also with a host of others who want to leave the jiggling to their desserts. Count Jessica Simpson, Lisa Rinna, Mel B. and Kirstie Alley among its legions of fans.

Alley calls sugar-free Jell-O and Cool Whip Free "the greatest diet invention" ever.

Rinna, who works the red carpet during awards season for E!, stocks her fridge with ready-made Jell-O cups.

"It's just 10 calories, so when I'm trying to stay in red-carpet shape it is such a great low-cal snack for when I need something sweet," she says.

Jell-O started with four flavors but has grown to 28. Former Spice Girl Mel B., aka Melanie Brown, prefers strawberry, one of the originals. (Raspberry, orange and lemon are the other three.)

Rinna says she grew up eating different Jell-O flavors. "My mom used to make us Jell-O salad every night using a different flavor and mixing in fresh fruit," she says. Rinna now makes Jell-O with her daughters, Delilah Belle, 10, and Amelia Gray, 7. "Just the other night, the girls and I made cherry Jell-O cups that we served for dessert," she says. "It was easy for them to do and really fun."

Jell-O also reminds Brown of her childhood. "I remember making Jell-O as a kid and waiting for it to set," Brown says. "We loved to watch it wobble."

Though Brown appreciates Jell-O for its dietary benefits, it's not just about the calories. "As a performer and a mother of two young children (Phoenix Chi, 9, and Angel Iris, 1 ), I need to have smart snacks on hand at all times," she says. "The sugar-free Jell-O cups are great because I can take them on the road with me wherever I go."
