One moment's negligence might have caused 43-year-old Sunil Deshmane a lifetime of grief had it not been for an efficient medical team at Hadapsar's Noble Hospital.
On February 28 around 9.30am, paper factory employee Deshmane was working at a paper cutting machine when his left hand got stuck in the machine. His left limb was completely sliced away from his body.
"Colleagues rushed Deshmane to a rural hospital for first aid. The rural hospital contacted our orthopedic surgeon Dr Sachin Karmakar, who put a team of experts together for the case," Noble Hospital director Dr Mangesh Lingayat informed. At the Noble Hospital, a team of specialist doctors, including hand surgeon Dr Shailesh Patil, anesthesist Dr HK Sale and Dr Pallavi Butiyani and a team of two plastic surgeons Dr Rajendra Gandhi and Dr Abhishek Ghosh were chosen for the complicated surgery.
Plastic surgeons worked on two parts simultaneously thus reducing the operation time to nine hours. The surgery gave Deshmane his hand back with normal functioning ability, except for a few restrictions.
"The advantage of this type of surgery is that the patient has his own natural hand and not an artificial one. Deshmane can now do crude and strength-related movements though he may not be able to do fine and micro level activities," Dr Karmakar said.
