Fit Kids offers recipe suggestions for healthy meals

Apr. 6--BLOOMINGTON -- School lunch programs take care of five meals a week, but planning for the other 16 can be a challenge. |

That's why The Pantagraph started a recipe roundup as part of Fit Kids, a nearly year-long initiative dedicated to identifying and highlighting common-sense approaches to preventing childhood obesity and developing healthier lifestyles for kids and their parents.

Twin City nutritionists contributed several recipes in the five categories -- breakfast, sack lunches, after-school snacks, dinner and desserts -- but we want to offer even more suggestions for quick, healthy family meals. To do that, we are looking to our readers.

Everyone likely has at least one recipe for a healthy meal that their kids gobble up. If you share them with us, we'll include them in the Fit Kids recipe roundup for other families to enjoy.

And if you submit a recipe between today and April 20, you will be entered into a drawing to win six tickets to "Seussical," an adaptation of the Broadway musical that will be performed by a children's professional theater company at 3 p.m. April 26 at the Bloomington Center for Performing Arts.

The musical features some of the favorite characters in Dr. Seuss's books, including the Cat in the Hat, JoJo and Horton the Elephant.

Each person can enter up to two recipes by going to and clicking on the recipe submission link. Mailed entries will not be accepted. Recipes should fall into one of the six categories and need to be healthy.

Remember, a family-favorite recipe can be made healthier by making such changes as using low-fat ingredients, substituting a whole egg for two egg whites or using applesauce instead of oil.

The winner of the recipe contest will be notified April 21.
