Mar. 19--DEAR SHOPPING: I have a family history of skin cancer, so I am supposed to have minimal sun exposure. Every self-tanning lotion/ cream/spray I have used has caused an itchy rash. It doesn't matter if I pay a lot (Lancôme) or a little (Neutrogena). I am not looking forward to swimsuit and shorts weather. Do you know of a product for sensitive skin that will not cause such a reaction but goes on smoothly and evenly?

--Diane, Elk Grove

DEAR DIANE: Most self-tanners -- no matter the price -- contain the same ingredients to stimulate the pigment in your skin so that it changes color. But different products use different formulations. I found two you might try:

The first is Paula Begoun's Almost The Real Thing Self Tanning Gel ($12.95), which is fragrance-free and has no synthetic coloring agents. It can be used on both the face and body. You can order it at www.cosmeticscop.com.

Aveda Sun Source ($16.50) is another safe method to create color. It takes about two to three hours, so it's best to use this (and most self-tanners) in the evening and not immediately after a shower or bath.

The Aveda product also claims to have no dyes, but it does contain some avocado and sesame oil extracts. It's available at www.aveda.com or at an Aveda salon (which you can find at the Web site).

I personally am not sensitive to self- tanners, and one of my favorites is Jergens Natural Glow, which comes in several shades. Most importantly, because you have a history of skin cancer in your family, always apply sunscreen frequently -- whether or not you're using self-tanner.

DEAR SHOPPING: One of the annoying side effects of the aging process is that my fingernails have become brittle. I have tried a clear polish to strengthen them, and it works fine. But the result is glossy nails, which is not really a businesslike look for a man. Do you know of a matte finish, nail-strengthening polish for men that would work as well?

--D.M., Elk Grove

DEAR D.M.: I would try OPI Nail Matte Nail Envy strengthener ($14.50). It has the hardening benefits of the original product but with a natural finish. No shine. Another option is Nail Trek's Intensive Therapy II hardener ($9.95). You can find both products at beauty supply stores, salons and ULTA.
