Cosmetic injections demand closer public health scrutiny

Despite their growing popularity, cosmetic injections can lead to
serious side effects. Like any medical procedure, they shouldn't be
taken lightly.

This week, investigators revealed they're looking into three
cases of kidney failure in women who reportedly received such
treatment last month at Altmed of the Triad in Greensboro.

As the investigation by local, state and federal agencies moves
forward, troubling allegations emerge. A UNC Hospitals doctor listed
as "medical director" says she isn't affiliated with the clinic. Nor
could clinic officials produce samples of what was injected into the
women's hips and buttocks.

And the silicone substance they reportedly identified isn't
approved by the Federal Drug Administration for such use.

The immediate concern is for the unnamed out-of-state women who
suffered kidney failure and are on permanent dialysis. What they
must have thought would be a routine visit became a life-
threatening nightmare.

Dr. Jeff Engel, state epidemiologist, suggests asking questions
before getting cosmetic injections. At the top of the list is
finding out if the person giving the injections is a licensed doctor
or supervised by one trained in such procedures as required by law.

Investigators are trying to find out if that happened in the
three cases at Altmed. So far, indications are that it didn't. As a
result, an order by the county health department prevents the clinic
from giving cosmetic injections.

Even though public health agencies are chronically understaffed,
they must find the time to determine whether a business offering any
type of medical procedure is properly licensed and complies with
strict state staffing rules.

Finally, violators should be vigorously prosecuted for what
amounts to practicing medicine without a license.
