A gynecologic oncologist will use a pelvic exam, various tests and imaging tools to detect and diagnose cancerous tissues. This specialist may use medical or surgical interventions that include chemotherapy, radiation treatment, lymph node dissection, surgical staging, laparoscopy including robot-assisted procedures, paracentesis, hysterectomy, removal of pelvic masses, and other surgical and non-surgical interventions to help rid the patient of gynecological cancers.

Gynecologic Oncologist Profession Details:



A gynecologic oncologist must first obtain a medical doctor degree and complete the necessary hands-on training. This is followed by at least 4 years in an approved OBGYN residency program. An additional fellowship with intensive training in cancer research and treatment options takes an additional 3 to 4 years. The physician must then successfully complete both the OBGYN and the gynecologic oncology board exams.

Gynecologic Oncologist Associations:



The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology oversees requirements and certification for OBGYN physicians. This board requires continuing education and recertification in order for physicians to maintain their licensing and certifications to practive OBGYN and its specialties. Those who specialize in gynecologic oncology may choose to become a member of the Society for Gynecologic Oncology.
