"Balance" Therapeutic (Medical) Massage

Elizabeth Cassie Christensen, LMT

A new term that is currently being used and referred to as Medical Massage. Massage in the hands of a knowledgeable therapist has been shown to help facilitate the healing of damaged muscles. Whether from acute injury, for example; in an automobile accident: or in overuse injuries or chronic strain; as in carpal tunnel syndrome.
Medical or Therapeutic Massage is outcome-based massage, predominantly the application of a specific treatment targeted to the specific problem(s) the client presents.
Often this is requested by prescription from a Physician or Chiropractor with a diagnosis. The treatment is administered after a thorough assessment/evaluation by the licensed massage therapist with specific outcomes being the basis for treatment. It is also known as clinical massage or Therapeutic massage.
There are many massage schools and programs claiming to teach 'Medical Massage" technique. There is neither a specific technique nor any licensing that defines medical massage. It is using a combination of techniques of massage therapies and applying those methods to facilitate the body’s healing mechanism.
When a insurance company pays for Massage Therapy, any massage therapists can bill for massage as long as they are licensed in massage therapy and are able to show improvement in the condition of the patient/client.
Cassie has shown through many clients, that she has the knowledge and ability to help her clients improve their health through the use of massage therapy.
