Higher Lifestyle: Pain Relief, Injury Recovery

Welcome to the Higher Lifestyle blog, hosted by internationally-known pain relief expert, Nina Schnipper. Nina is a personal trainer and massage therapist at Higher Spa & Studio, in Basalt, Colorado.

To keep things simple, the focus of this blog will be on Pain Relief and Injury Recovery.

Today, I'll discuss whiplash as ski injury. Why did I choose this topic? Because today, while skiing, I wiped out and got whiplash.

In Colorado, when your skis, poles, hats, and other gear go flying in different directions, we call that kind of crashing a "yard sale".

I'm not sure how it happened. It was a beautiful day on Colorado's ski slopes. My massage therapist buddy, Kathy, and I were having a great morning.

The first thing Kathy said after I finished tumbling down the hill in front of her was "I'm going to give you some cranial work (a style of massage for the head and nervous system) this week".
I replied "I guess there's no one better to wipe out with than another massage therapist, huh?"

I knew I had whiplashed because of the abrupt knocking of my head as I fell end-over-end, and the crunching sound in my neck as I bonked into the hard-packed snow.

Not the fun side of skiing?

But it happens all the time.

What should you do if you suspect you sustained a whiplash?
> As with any signs of a head injury or trauma from an accident, do not move the injured person until first aid is administered.
> Determine consciousness, or any signs of neurological impairment
> If medical personnel can determine that the injured person sustained a whiplash by itself, without other injuries to the body, then follow these steps for optimal recovery...

Ice sore muscles regularly. Opt for ice or a cool-pack instead of heat.
Maintain good posture. This is especially important for the first 6-9 months following the injury.
Remember that scar tissue wants to creep into your neck muscles. Although it is useful, it can create immense tension patterns.
Practicing good posture will allow the neck to heal in a better state, and it will prevent future problems due to incorrect healing.

Feel free to comment here or ask questions if you have sustained a neck injury or whiplash.

Thank you for your comments. You are obviously selling a form of magnetic therapy. Although magnets might be effective, I see them as a form of Complementary Medicine, meant to complement a lifestyle of therapeutic exercise and nutrition. Magnets should be added to one's lifestyle, only after the fundamentals of exercise and nutrition have been exhausted.
