Today I spoke with a former patient's wife who called seeking a referral. I told her about the feature article that I had written and asked if she might share with me how she encouraged her husband to enter therapy.

She told me that she remembered it as if it were yesterday. She had arranged a time alone when they would not be disturbed. She expressed her love for him, her concerns about what she had observed and how she didn't want to lose him but wanted so very much to grow old together.

When he agreed to get help, but told her that he couldn't work with a "touchy-feely" therapist, she offered to search for a down-to-earth therapist and then set up a convenient appointment for him.
