According to a study reported by Reuters, the key to losing weight - and keeping it off - is to eat a big breakfast packed with carbohydrates and protein; then for the remainder of the day, follow a low-carb, low-calorie diet. According to researchers referenced in the article, the "big breakfast diet" works because it controls appetite and satisfies cravings for sweets and starches. They also point...

As I write this, late June 2008, the cost of a gallon of regular gasoline in my neighborhood is $4.79 (and 9/10 - whatever that's about). Six weeks ago, it was $3.99. That's a 17 percent hike, or 147 percent annually. If my math is accurate, at that rate, in 365 days, one gallon will set us back $6.89. Of course, the inflation in oil pricing has spawned a whole cyclone of side effects. Airlines are...

By now, the story of Tim Russert has run through the news cycle so many times that you would have to be on another planet not to know he passed away at 58. I watched "Meet the Press" regularly and welcomed his keen political savvy and ever present civility. I appreciated greatly his family bonds and was touched deeply to learn he always told his son, "I'm proud of you." That is something I make a point...

Out of town, delayed, exhausted, and weary from what the airlines had foisted upon me in the name of their twisted, loose definition of "customer service," I sought energy in the airport coffee bar, hoping to remain awake long enough to arrive at my destination. "What would you like?" asked the young woman behind the counter. "Coffee please." "Sugar and cream?" "No thanks. But where do you keep the...

Posted on a placard at the senior center: "Aging is not for sissies." As I am indeed aging, I will raise my right hand and unwaveringly attest to this certainty so boldly and simply stated. However, being a glass-is-half-full kind of guy, I also see some blessings brought forth by the years. The turning of the calendar has given me an understanding that emotions are the sophisticated seasonings of...

Given time and inspiration, what can be accomplished in 100 years? In 1908, the must-have vehicle was the initial Model T as it rolled forth on rickety spoked wheels for the first time from the Ford assembly line. The traffic signal, invented by Garrett A. Morgan, flashed for the first time 15 years later. (Most likely, although lacking tangible proof, tailgaters, gridlock, and rush hour started when...

Losing weight can be laborious. Nonetheless, it has its perks. Nothing so uplifts the soul as having a co-worker notice changes. "Wow! You look great...new haircut?" OK, the intent there was positive, but not everyone notices weight loss specifically; yet compliments are passed and encouragement is provided, lightening the load. Conversely, whereby achievement of the goal is exhilarating; maintenance...

Offering up the rationale that she had to go out of town, my trainer canceled our appointment. I knew the "real" reason: She had grown tired of me, leaving to find another greybeard to tutor; tossing me to the curb like yesterday's recyclables. As revenge, I would forego my exercise regiment; opting instead to sleep late, eat immense amounts of sugary snacks, gain lots of weight, and make her feel...

The Chamber of Deputies, France's lower house of parliament, recently adopted a bill making it illegal for anyone to "incite extreme thinness;" the latest and strongest of a series of measures proposed in the wake of a 2006 anorexia-linked death of a Brazilian model. The legislation would allow sanctions against those responsible for a magazine photo of a model whose "thinness altered her health."...

Staring at the red LED numbers on the scale, she appeared as if she was willing them to change. If she glared enough, they might, just maybe, morph down to 172, 158, or better yet, 137. "This is too frustrating," she said, exhaling the annoyance with a blast. "I only lost a quarter pound this week. At this rate, I'll be 60 before I reach my right weight!" Whenever I hear that comment, whether the age...
