Tano's 40 years of natural resource experience have been defined by the realization that the protection and management of natural resources is not about managing the resources themselves but about managing the way people use natural resources and define the fundamental quality of life issues. That use is based on human values, which are based, in part, on the social, economic, cultural and ethical parameters of society. His experience working on the Mississippi River with the Corps of Engineers, long-range lake and river planning, hunting and fishing groups and internal constituents of the fish and wildlife agency across the country have resulted in a very diverse background in agency effectiveness, project management; strategic, long range and operational planning, evaluation and outcome measures development.

EXPERIENCE

Tano is a big picture, systems thinker that is willing to get down in the trenches and tease out the essence of the problem. If you can’t identify specifically what the problem is, you can’t identify specific solutions or rank the strategies. Tano has command of a variety of facilitation and assessment skills and processes. Among them, “Open Space” meeting management has helped agencies get out of their same old meeting ruts.
He has experience as a fisheries researcher, an area fisheries manager, lake management planner, river and stream manager, and strategic and operational planner for fish and wildlife. As a professional he has managed streams, rivers, and lakes; worked on state policy; facilitated numerous meetings; designed and implemented problem solving and decision making processes; authored scientific publications, and conducted training courses. He designed performance measures that incorporate long-term expected ecological and social outcomes.
