Whole lifestyle adds up to fitness

Organizers of the Total Wellness Seminar on Saturday in Litchfield Beach want to increase awareness about lifestyle decisions and preventive steps that factor into everyday health.

Neil Fico, chiropractic physician of the Strand Spine Institute, the host for the expo, stressed what he called a wellness protocol.

"We try to focus on prevention, awareness and health education, and what that entails," he said.

Fico spoke of how one's lifestyle is too easily taken for granted.

"I think people think you get sick from bad luck, bad germs and bad genes," he said. "That's not really the case. It's about life choices that affect your lifestyle."

Diet, sleep patterns and stress all can compound demands on the human body, Fico said.

"Those end up being the problems that become disease patterns," he said. "We want people to be aware that your health is dependent on your lifestyles. We need to make sure people are aware you have other options."

Besides free health screenings and an emphasis on natural health, the expo will have various speakers giving talks and demonstrations of ways to avert sickness through such activities as yoga, Pilates and a boot-camp fitness regimen.

Fico said improving and keeping good health melds four elements: physical, emotional, spiritual and nutritional.

The brain controls the body, he said, and people are used to adapting to their environment and putting up with or surviving with stressful elements.

"We understand we need to exercise," Fico said. "It's about how do we do it."

Yoga and meditation have been around so long, he said, citing examples of ways to get back to get back to such roots for coping every day. That's what the expo intends to cover.

"It's community awareness, but also giving back to the community," Fico said.

Even on the Grand Strand's many golf courses, injuries can be frequent but thwarted.

At the expo, Paul Contento, a golf coach at Litchfield Country Club will discuss "Swings, Faults & Fixes."

"If you try to mix the different setups and swing protocols, you put a lot of strain on your back," Contento said. "We want to get people to realize if they stick with one swing style, they can lessen the chance for back injuries."

He said many people like to just grab a club and whale away, but with pointers on realizing which swinging style a person leans toward, and practicing fundamentals in which the body is designed to work, a person can improve at the sport and lessen the chance for injury.

"We make it harder than it should be," Contento said.
