Student Strikes Back in Defense of Acupuncture

Dear Dr. Gott: I am currently in school to become an
acupuncturist Ac. DOM (Doctor of Oriental Medicine). I have to say I
was appalled by your newspaper article. Because you are uneducated
about acupuncture, might I suggest not making any comments on a
subject you know nothing about. And, quite frankly, Dr. Gott, there
is all kinds of scientific research available.

In fact, if you were watching the Olympics, as the whole world
was on Aug. 17, 2008, there was a small piece on acupuncture you
might have been interested in.

Then again, you are a doctor in a box, as per usual to the
stereotype of a doctor. When you can't think outside the box, your
patients come looking for an acupuncturist. Thanks for the business.

I think you are one of the dumbest doctors I have ever come
across, and I meet a lot of doctors. I work in an emergency room.

Dear Reader: I was quite taken back by your rudeness. I don't
believe acupuncture is a cure-all, but I am willing to accept that
it can work for some people.

Now, to the column you enclosed regarding my comments on
acupuncture. There is no hard scientific proof that acupuncture can
cure any disease. I do not recommend against acupuncture, but rather
that it should be considered once a proper diagnosis has been made.
It can be used alongside modern medicine, but I don't believe it
should be relied on as a sole treatment until other options have
been exhausted.

I would welcome comments from both the modern and alternative-
medicine communities regarding my recommendations. I am looking for
intelligent, dignified responses. Medical doctors who also have
training in alternative treatments, please write to tell me about
your experiences with both schools of thought.

Write Dr. Gott c/o United Media, 200 Madison Ave. 4th floor, New
York, NY 10016.
