Sep. 22--The Lake County Elder Affairs Coordinating Council will host an Elder Expo from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lake County Agricultural Center, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares.
This year's theme is "A Tour of Good Health, Good Food and Gardens."
The free event will include health screenings, informational speakers, tours of Discovery Gardens, pneumonia shots, door prizes and cooking demonstrations.
Speakers will talk about a variety of topics, including wills, trusts and estates, financial planning, and stroke and brain injuries. The expo will also feature 24 vendors and Operation Medicine Chest, which is a lockbox for individuals to discard outdated or unwanted medicines that will be properly disposed by the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Free screenings
Florida Hospital Waterman in Tavares will offer free screenings for peripheral artery disease, a disease that can lead to amputation, heart attack or death if not treated. The screenings will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the hospital, located off U.S. Highway 441.

Seniors lunch social
The Fruitland Park Recreation Department will have a seniors social buffet lunch Wednesday at The Casino, near City Hall on Berckman Street. The theme is patriotic. Participants are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
The Villages Twirlers show team will provide entertainment.
Coffee is served at 11 a.m.; the buffet luncheon will be at noon, followed by bingo.
Seniors should bring a side dish to share. The city will provide the entree.

LSGN brings together those who write grants for public, nonprofit and for-profit agencies in Lake and Sumter counties to enable them to be successful in bringing more grants to the counties.

Boat poker float
Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4335 has rescheduled its inaugural Red Neck Yacht Club boat poker float for Sunday to raise money for Lake County Special Olympics.
The event, which was scheduled for Aug. 31, will be on Lake Eustis starting at 10 a.m., with registration at the docks of Crazy Gators in downtown Eustis.
The entry fee is $25 for the boat captain and $15 for each additional guest and includes one poker hand, a barbecue dinner, a chance to win raffle and live-auction items and entertainment with Rick Brown.
Boat captains will receive "Red Neck Yacht Club" T-shirts, and passengers may purchase shirts for $12 each.
For those who do not own or have access to a boat, $5 is the admission to the awards party at 3 p.m. at Crazy Gators, and to be eligible for raffle prizes.
The deadline to register is Friday.

Grant aids vision-impaired
New Vision for Independence, a nonprofit agency providing free instruction, vision rehabilitation and support services to visually impaired or blind adults and their families in Lake and Sumter counties, has been awarded a grant of $5,510 from the Community Foundation of South Lake. The grant will be used for community education in South Lake and to promote awareness of the no-cost services available from New Vision.
