NEW YORK, Sep 7, 2008 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A New York couple who have trying for
years to have a second child will finally get their wish -- and then some, since
they're set to have sextuplets.
Victor and Digna Carpio, naturalized citizens from Ecuador, said they didn't
want their 7-year-old son, Jhancarlos, to grow up alone. But they didn't expect
it to work out this way.
They learned the news nearly five months ago after Digna Carpio, 31, became ill
during a gym workout, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.
"I suddenly felt faint, and my heart began racing wildly," she told the
newspaper.
She rushed to the hospital, where doctors determined she was two weeks pregnant.
Doctors first thought she was carrying quintuplets and that "a mass behind the
babies" could be a tumor, Digna Carpio said. But the mass was actually a sixth
fetus. She is carrying four boys and two girls.
"Mami, that's too many babies," the expectant mother recalled Jhancarlos
shrieking. "They'll destroy the house!"
But her son soon warmed to the idea and now "reads and sings to the babies every
day," his mother told the newspaper.
Digna Carpio, who stands barely 5 feet tall, is in her 21st week and spends most
mornings in bed sleeping.
