Because you are moving multiple body parts in different directions, you are also increasing your calorie expenditure. Functional strength training also increases lean muscle mass, which naturally burns fat. In addition to that functional strength training involves getting your body to move in many different directions, paths of motion (front and back, side to side and rotation) and moving multiple body parts together. Therefore, it is no limit to what you can do in functional training because it is only limited by your ability to move and your creativity. Functional strength training works your entire body, allowing you to burn more calories at higher intensities. Our bodies go through a variety of motions every day Lifting: Laundry basket, grocery bags, kids, etc. Reaching and pulling: Opening the refrigerator or dryer, putting dishes away or picking things up from the floor Power: Standing up from chair, going up stairs or walking up a hill Balancing: Walking, holding multiple bags of groceries while carefully navigating the stairs or carrying a baby while talking on the phone and cooking dinner Combinations of the above Functional Exercises And Benefits Functional strength training helps you to move more fluidly and be able to use your entire body to perform feats of strength, such as squatting, lunging and lifting. It also teaches you to move and stabilize your core properly, which maintains your balance and posture, and provides the source of strength and power. You also learn how to transfer energy from one body part to another body part. To get better at these daily movements, strength training is a must and there are four functional exercises that will help you get the most out of your body. Performing these several times a week will enable you to do more with less effort and more confidence. You can do them anywhere, anytime: Push-ups: Start with wall push-ups and progress to placing your hands on the kitchen counter. You can do 5-6 while waiting for the microwave to finish. These firm your chest, arms, abs and back. Squats or lunges: Most reaching, lifting and bending movements involve an element of squatting or lunging. Remember to push out your tush and don't let your knees go farther forward than your toes. You'll strengthen your knees, quads and hips. Grocery Bag Lift: Each time you go shopping strengthen your arms by lifting a bag 6 times to the front, side and rear. You can also do a modified bicep curl. Just remember to keep your shoulders back and abs tight while working your arms. Lift: Pick-up that heavy pet food bag or laundry basket by squaring your feet shoulder width apart, squatting down, grabbing hold and pushing up with your legs. Put it down and do it again. If your knees hurt, practice lifting from a chair until you get stronger.

Dress Up Your Memorial Day Weekend Salads!

Wellness.com - Dress Up Your Memorial Day Weekend Salads! by FreshBaby

A great tossed salad is nothing without a delicious dressing. Homemade salad dressings are simple to make, taste better, and are much healthier than the store-bought bottles.

To make homemade salad dressing, simply start with a container that has a tight-fitting lid. Add the dressing ingredients from one of the recipes below to the container, cover it and give it a good shake. It's that easy!

-Classic French Dijon: -
3/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
Pinch of salt and pepper

-Creamy Dill:-
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp chopped green onions
1 Tbsp fresh dill, chopped
Pinch of salt and pepper

-Sweet Balsamic: -
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1-2 garlic cloves, minced
1 Tbsp sugar
Pinch of salt and pepper

-Sesame: -
1/2 cup olive oil
1 Tbsp sesame oil
2 Tbsp soy sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
2 tsp fresh ginger, minced
2 Tbsp brown sugar

-Lemon Garlic: -
1/2 cup olive oil
1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
3 Tbsp lemon juice
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
Pinch of salt and pepper

-Fattoush Salad:-
This is a refreshing Middle Eastern chopped salad with a lemony zip. Chop or dice all of the ingredients into small pieces, so each forkful contains a complete variety of delicious flavors.

Ingredients:
2 pita breads
1 head romaine lettuce, washed and dried
4 Roma tomatoes, diced
1 cucumber, peeled and diced
2 Tbsp mint leaves, chopped
2 Tbsp cilantro, chopped
2 Tbsp parsley, chopped
1/4 to 1/2 cup Lemon Garlic Dressing (recipe above)

Directions:
Toast pita breads until well done, cool, and break/crush into small pieces. Set aside. Chop lettuce into very small pieces and place in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients, including the pita pieces. Lorraine had to face obstacles most of us never see. A perfect storm of cowardice, ignorance, indifference and greed landed at Lorraine's doorstep. She and her family were living in a nightmare that she didn't think would ever end. Her tenacity and confidence to regain her health in a situation that could have easily forced her to spend the rest of her life as a fraction of the person she was is an inspiration to us all.

At the age of 32 Lorraine, married with 2 young children, discovered she inherited a gene which is linked to a higher incidence of breast and ovarian cancer. Lorraine lives in Scotland, and the genetic counselor she was working with suggested she look into scheduling a double mastectomy and oophorectomy (removal of both ovaries) to reduce her risk of these two types of cancer. Following this advice Lorraine and her husband went to see a surgeon to get his opinion. Initially the surgeon said she was too young for this surgery and that she should come back around the age of 42-44. Later that day he called back and said he changed his mind and to move forward with the surgery. He said that menopause is not that bad.

Lorraine loves her family dearly and wanted to protect her health so, with her husband, agreed to have her breasts and ovaries removed, a decision they both now regret.

Once they made their decision they were swept up into the perfect storm that would create a nightmare for Lorraine and her family. The perfect storm was started decades ago when unpurified horse pee, Premarin&#0153, was advertised as HRT and the FDA allowed it. Premarin&#0153 isn't HRT for anything and that lie gained momentum because women and their doctors were desperate to stop the suffering of profound hypogonadism. Like a train going down the tracks, it picked up desperate doctors and women as it made its way around the world. Fueling this train was Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, who kept physicians and the public ignorant by not allowing hormone testing in any clinical trials, such as the Women's Health Initiative and every other trial Premarin&#0153 has been used in. Now that Pfizer owns Wyeth and their drug, Premarin&#0153, Pfizer continues to fuel that train with the lie. Instead of being brave and telling the public that Premarin&#0153 restores nothing and isn't even close to genuine HRT, it acts like a coward and is indifferent to the suffering of so many around the world. Greed is the grease on the train tracks and Pfizer is pouring it on.

Lorraine was told that she would be sore after her operations but shouldn't feel too differently. She was told that some women suffer after their ovaries are taken out and some don't. That was all the preparation she was given, with no discussion about gonadal hormone replacement*. If a man were scheduled to have his testicles removed at the age of 32 do you think he would be told that some men suffer and some don't after their testicles are removed and nothing more? Do you think there would be no talk about gonadal hormone replacement? Ovaries and testicles provide the same hormones and provide the same functionality to men and women. Removing the gonads, whether from a man or a woman, produces the same suffering because the same hormones are lost.

After her surgery to remove her ovaries Lorraine suffered horribly. She had 30-40 hot flashes a day, which interfered with her sleep so much that she got almost no sleep. She got so dizzy that she once had to sit down in the supermarket and wait for the dizziness to pass. She became anxious, would shake, and didn't want to leave her house because she didn't want anyone to see her like that. She had mood swings, would get angry easily, and became aggressive in her personality, which was very unlike her. She couldn't have sex because of vaginal dryness and had absolutely no sexual response. Prior to her surgery Lorraine and her husband had a very active sex life. Because of all this, Lorraine became suicidal.

For months and months Lorraine repeatedly asked her GP and genetic counselor for gonadal replacement hormones and was repeatedly denied. She was told by her genetic counselor that hormone replacement was a bad idea because it would increase her cancer risk. This made no sense. Lorraine lowered her cancer risk significantly by removing the organs that were at risk for cancer. What about the rest of her body, which needed her ovarian hormones to function properly?

This went on for 13 months. Finally her GP gave her a patch for estradiol which did nothing to relieve her suffering. It didn't work because an estradiol patch must be given in a replacement dose and is only 1 component of many necessary for complete gonadal hormone replacement. Lorraine needed complete gonadal hormone replacement and she realized that if she was going to get help she would have to get it from someone else. Lorraine requested a referral from her GP to a professor of menopause.

With high hopes Lorraine met with a professor of menopause and explained her situation. Lorraine received estradiol gel, a testosterone implant in her hip, and progesterone pills. Lorraine had finally received appropriate replacement for profound hypogonadism! When I asked how she felt after receiving proper treatment she exclaimed, "Brilliant!"

Lorraine is 34 now and has her life back. She is no longer suffering and neither is her husband nor are her children. She is different than before her operations, but close enough to normal to be comfortable with where she is. She is a strong proponent of women receiving proper care for profound hypogonadism because she knows firsthand the suffering it can bring. She has joined a Yahoo group, hotflushescoldfury@yahoogroups.com, where women can share their experiences and support each other as they face the perfect storm of ignorance, cowardice, and greed together.

Lorraine weathered the perfect storm that still rages and continues to derail women and their doctors from their quest for appropriate treatment of profound hypogonadism. You can soften the blow of this storm with information and knowledge. If you have profound hypogonadism then say it and expect complete treatment for it. If someone says that HRT is bad for you then say "Not if it's done right." Unpurified horse pee, Premarin&#0153, is bad for you, not gonadal hormone replacement. Remember, hormone replacement therapy is one of the most successful areas of medicine when it is pure, measured and monitored.

Lorraine is proof of that.

*Gonadal hormone replacement means replacing the hormones no longer provided by the gonads, ovaries in women, and testicles in men. Gonads produce the same hormones and function in men and women. Men with profound hypogonadism suffer with the same symptoms as women.
Arthritis Awareness Month: Supplements and Herbal Remedies

Wellness.com - Arthritis Awareness Month: Supplements and Herbal Remedies by Andrew Pacholyk

by Andrew Pacholyk, MS, L.Ac

May is Arthritis Awareness Month. Arthritis,: which means "joint inflammation" is a general term for over 100 different joint disorders with symptoms ranging from mild aches and pains to severe swelling and crippling pain. Alternative answers for arthritis include a acupuncture, effective exercise, dietary changes and controlling emotional stress.

Taking additional vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements can help to supplement major deficiencies. Touch therapies and hydrotherapy have also shown to be very beneficial. Learn more about how to improve your arthritis and get it under control, naturally. I will be featuring alternative answers for treating arthritis throughout the month.

Supplements

Acidophilus: The normal, healthy colon contains "friendly" bacteria (85% lactobacillus and 15% coliform bacteria). It is the friendly bacterial flora found in yogurt and is essential to the digestive system. When these bacteria are not in balance, then the person may experience bloating, flatulence, constipation, and malabsorption of nutrients. Acidophilus taken as a dietary supplement may help to detoxify and to rebuild a balanced intestinal flora. It is used for the prevention of Candida as well as for treatment. Acidophilus aids the digestion and helps to replace the "friendly" intestinal flora.

Baikal Skullcap: Flavonoid compounds of baikal skullcap display significant antioxidant effects and promote a healthy inflammation response. Baikal skullcap modulatates both COX and LOX pathways, encourages healthy cardiovascular function, and promotes normal cell growth.* As an antioxidant, it is superior to vitamins C and E. Moreover, baikal skullcap provides immune support, non-sedating anxiolytic effects, modulates histamine release, and supports the health of cells during oxidative treatments.

Calcium and Magnesium can be effective for pain associated with muscle spasms. Take 500 mgs of each, two-three times per day.

A diet that includes Flaxseed, flaxseed oil and fish oils contain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and decrease pain. Omega-3 fatty acids help lower cholesterol, may help reduce the risk of irregular heart rhythms and may also improve certain factors, like high blood pressure.

Probiotic A probiotic will fortify your intestinal flora, which are essential for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. This is key to good health and a strong immune system. Studies have shown that patients who begin a course of probiotics with fiber a few days prior to surgery are less likely to pick up a post-operative infection during their hospital stays. This demonstrates a strong connection between intestinal flora and immune function. The fiber, which provides the friendly bacteria both food and sanctuary, can be as simple as an apple or banana.

Magnesium is essential for forming synovial fluid which is the joint cushion. Magnesium is important for cell replication, energy production, the transmission of nerve impulses and hormonal activity. Magnesium can be found in brown rice, soy beans, nuts, brewer's yeast, whole wheat flour and legumes. Consider supplementing magnesium with a recommended daily dose of 200 - 400 mg daily. Caution: Magnesium is toxic to people with renal (kidney) problems or AV (atrioventricular) blocks.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause fatigue. In one trial, 2,500 -5,000 mcg of vitamin B12 given by injection every two to three days, led to improvement in 50-80% of a group of people with arthritis; most improvement appeared after several weeks of B12 shots. While the research in this area remains preliminary, people with arthritis considering a trial of vitamin B12 injections should consult a nutritional doctor. Oral or sublingual B12 supplements are unlikely to obtain the same results as injectable B12 because the body's ability to absorb large amounts is relatively poor.

Vitamins B6,: Foods rich in the B vitamins, which help regulate metabolism, are also beneficial, as diets high in sugar tend to burn these vitamins at a faster rate. These foods include wheat germ, yogurt, and liver.

Vitamin C acts primarily in cellular fluid. Vitamin C scavenges free radicals and cleans up waste products. In addition to its anti-oxidative activities, vitamin C benefits many other body functions. Vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, which is an important component in the structural make up of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bone. Vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitters and norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood. Vitamin C, even in small amounts, can protect molecules in the body, such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) from damage by free radicals. Vitamin C helps in the fight against free-radical formation caused by pollution and cigarette smoke and also helps return vitamin E to its active form. Take 2,000 - 8,000 mg in divided dosage per day, depending on bowel tolerance.

Herbal Remedies

The medicinal benefits of herbs have been recorded for centuries. Herbs were extensively used to cure practically every known illness and has been documented by Egyptian, Roman, Native American, Persians and Hebrews alike. Many herbs contain powerful ingredients that, if used correctly, can help heal the body. By using herbs in their complete form, the body's healing process utilizes a balance of the ingredients provided by nature.

Herbs and herbal formulas can be taken in a variety of ways.

*You may steep herbs as teas in order to release their healing properties.

* Herbal supplements in pills and capsules are another form. Therefore, your healthcare professional must be notified if you have any questions about safety. As a general rule: most of the bitter tasting herbs are medicinal herbs and the pleasant tasting herbs are less toxic and can be used more often. Also, some herbs in any form, should not be taken for more than seven days at a time. Others herbs are more beneficial with time. The fresh leaves, bark, and roots of herbs can be used in their natural form or can be found in dried form and used in capsules, tablets, tinctures, essential oils, powders, creams, lotions, and salves.

Herbal medicine is a wonderful solution for pain and pain management. L.Ac
Peacefulmind.com

There are hundreds of plants used all over the world, which are used in herbal medicine as treatments for bacterial infections. Here are some of the most accessible and reliable.

Bayberry (Myrica cerifera): stimulating the flow of bile, and also exhibits antibacterial activity. Use this herb externally as a poultice.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum): is an ancient herbal remedy found in the Chinese Materia Medica. Various terpenoids found in the volatile oil including eugenol and cinnamaldehyde account for cinnamonï¿1/2s medicinal effects. Both cinnamaldehyde and cinnamon oil vapors are potent anti-fungal compounds. Antibacterial actions have been found in cinnamon.

Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon): The medicinal benefits of cranberries have been touted in news reports for years, recognizing the small, four air-chambered berry for its ability to protect against urinary tract infections. However, new research suggests that not only does the cranberry, available in both white and red varieties, fight against bacterial infections in the urinary tract, but it is also associated with potentially lowering LDL cholesterol and slowing cancer cell growth.

Eucalyptus (eucalyptus globulus): It's been known for some time that extracts of eucalyptus oil inhibit the growth of some bacteria. Antibacterial activities of eucalyptus globulus leaf extract against isolated bacteria were investigated by determining minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). methods. It is concluded that eucalyptus globules leaf extract is effective against isolated bacteria.

Garlic (Allium sativum): The ancient Egyptians attached great importance to garlic, and used it as a money exchange. Folklore has always claimed that garlic is a great healer, and there is actually a lot of scientific evidence to support that claim. Allicin is the compound responsible for the healing benefits of garlic. Garlic's antibacterial characteristics have been tested even against drug-resistant varieties, and shown to have therapeutic activity. The sulfides in garlic may work in a way similar to that of penicillin and sulfa drugs, to counter the growth of bacteria.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadenis): Goldenseal is a native American medicinal plant introduced to early settlers by Cherokee Indians who used it as a wash for skin diseases, wounds, and for sore, inflamed eyes. Its roots are bright yellow, therefore, this is how it gets it's name. Goldenseal root has acquired a considerable reputation as a natural antibiotic and as a remedy for various gastric and genitourinary disorders.

Myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha): Myrrh is a gum resin that has been used since ancient times. The Egyptians used it to embalm bodies, and in biblical times it was one of the herbs brought by the Three Wise Men. Myrrh constituents are antibacterial and antifungal, exhibiting activity against e.coli, staphylococcus, and candida albicans, an overgrowth of which leads to yeast infections. Its antiseptic and disinfectant properties make it useful as a wash on cuts, burns and skin infections. Gargle several drops of tincture in water to relieve a sore throat. Use diluted myrrh as a mouthwash or apply the powder on the mucus membranes inside of the mouth to treat mouth sores and thrush.

Olive Leaf Extract: is an extraordinary herbal antibacterial as well as, antiviral extract. Obtained from specific parts of the olive tree (Olea europaea), this new proprietary phytochemical extract is not only safe, but is also a nontoxic immune system builder. Olive Leaf Extract has been used clinically in its present form for over a year.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca altermifolia): is the extracted oil from Melaleuca altermifolia tree native to Australia. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves of the tree and has been used by Australian aborigines for several centuries. Now the tree is grown all over the world for its medicinal properties. As an antibacterial agent, tea tree oil is said to alleviate hemorrhoids, and treat candidiasis and other vaginal infections. As an antifungal, tea tree oil has been used for years in the treatment of athlete's foot, ringworm, and nail infections.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Curcumin, the yellow color pigment of turmeric, is produced industrially from turmeric oleoresin. The healing properties of turmeric have made it a most sought after ingredient in cosmetics and drugs, as the leaf oil and extract can also be used as sunscreens and bio-pesticides. It is well recognized as the best anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic and wound healer.

Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus): has been used for hundreds of years for its astringent properties, treating a variety of skin problems, including boils, rashes, blemishes and burns. Yellow dock is valued as an antibacterial agent and even more as one of the best available sources of iron. Yellow dock's high iron content makes it beneficial for treating anemia and pregnant women. Yellow Dock also contains vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium and phosphorous.

Andrew Pacholyk, MS. Take advantage of your local crop year round, by freezing blueberries. That's right, blueberries freeze very well.

To freeze blueberries: Do not wash them. Lay a single layer of blueberries on a cookie sheet (or flat pan) and freeze them. Once frozen, packed the berries into containers or freezer storage bags. This method makes it is easy to grab a handful of berries from the freezer for pancakes, smoothies, etc. Wash them before using.

Wake Up and Smell the Bullies

Wellness.com - Wake Up and Smell the Bullies by DrE...

I had the honor of being part of a television panel on bullying a few weeks ago and left there feeling frustrated, as well as even more fired up that I have an important message to deliver. This show was on a Christian television station, and the motive was to bring more attention to the issue of bullying, the suicides that result from it, and what we can do, as a community, to make a difference.

There were many great discussions on the show, and I felt inspired by a mother, whose son was tragically killed by bullies, who took the energy of her grief and turned it into developing a program aimed at education. Both her courage and her insight are a testament to what we can do when faced with challenges in life. To stay silent, would have missed an opportunity to share her pain and wisdom with others who could be helped.

I have written quite a bit on the subject of bullying, and believe that I see the answers to change this epidemic. Part of that solution is parenting with wisdom and patience, not parenting with control and fear. The most troubling aspect of the bullying epidemic is that those who are in a position to effect changes may be blind to their contribution to the issues. Yes, that means you Mom and Dad.

On this panel was another psychologist, with all due respect to him, who near the end of the discussion stated that he was "old school" and believed in the idea of "spare the rod and spoil the child." This phrase has been uttered numerous times to me over the years, especially from parents in my work who feel frustrated by their kids' disrespectful behavior. However, depending on where the emphasis is placed, this can have two totally different meanings - either spare the rod and you will end up with a spoiled child, or don't spank your child, but love them unconditionally instead, i.e., spoil them with love instead. When there is ambiguity to things that are stated, much can become of interpretation.

-Spare Me...-
Many people attribute the phrase "spare the rod and spoil the child" to the Bible, but in my research, this is not a quote from the Bible. There are discussions of what was referred to in the Old Testament in Proverbs about child discipline (Prov 13:24: "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes (diligently)."), however, historically, it is believed that Solomon compiled the book of Proverbs from stories and verses of teachers and "wise men" in his day.

Furthermore, many of the comments in Proverbs supported his views of punishment. In fact when his son, Rehoboam, whom Solomon punished in a similar manner to what is in Proverbs, grew up and ruled over his kingdom, he had little regard for others welfare and was almost overthrown due to his brutality, as many of today's dictators are finding.

After the show ended, I did not want to let his comment go and continued the discussion off the air with the panel. I stated that what his comment allowed was for some parents to interpret the comment that it is okay for them to beat their kids. When we furthered this discussion, he stated that it is not what he meant, but I commented that is what he said. I further commented that he knows how this phrase is interpreted by many and without further explanation by him, he could not manage how others interpreted his comment. He then stated that the "rod of discipline" is what he intended. I said again, "That is not what you said." When asked further about the "rod of discipline," he could not fully explain what he meant (granted, time was short).
-
Discipline This...-
So let's discuss the word discipline. Many people equate the word discipline with punishment. The root of the word "discipline" is disciple. The word disciple means to teach. Teaching comes with boundaries, limits and goals, and as a teacher, I know that people do not learn very well in a state of fear. They may learn to avoid, but they do not learn co

Arthritis Awareness Month: Tips For Managing Arthritis

Wellness.com - Arthritis Awareness Month: Tips For Managing Arthritis by Andrew Pacholyk

by Andrew Pacholyk, MS. L.Ac

May is Arthritis Awareness Month. Arthritis,: which means "joint inflammation"
is a general term for over 100 different joint disorders with symptoms ranging
from mild aches and pains to severe swelling and crippling pain. Alternative
answers for arthritis include a acupuncture, effective exercise, dietary changes
and controlling emotional stress. Take additional vitamins, minerals and herbal
supplements can help to supplement major deficiencies. Touch therapies and
hydrotherapy have also shown to be very beneficial. Learn more about how to
improve your arthritis and get it under control, naturally. I will be featuring
alternative answers for treating arthritis throughout the month.

Tips For Managing Arthritis

Treatment of arthritis depends on the particular cause, a persons individual
needs, which joints are affected, the severity of the arthritis and how the
condition affects your daily lifestyle. Your age and occupation will also be
taken into consideration when your practitioner works with you to create a
treatment plan.

The goal in treating arthritis is to focus on eliminating the underlying (root)
cause of the arthritis. However, the cause is NOT necessarily curable, as this
is often a degenerative disease often associated with aging. The treatment goal,
should address the reducing of pain and discomfort and preventing further
disability. It is possible to greatly improve symptoms and other long-term types
of arthritis without medications. In fact, making lifestyle changes without
medications is preferable for osteoarthritis and other forms of joint
inflammation. If needed, medications should be used in addition to lifestyle
changes.

1. Acupuncture: Acupuncture has been shown to be extremely affective for long
term problems with arthritis. Acupuncture is a therapeutic modality that has
shown good benefits in the outcome measurements of pain relief for arthritis.
Electroacupuncture had shown even greater results with pain threshold, regional
pain scoring and sleep quality. A combination of both high frequencies,
associated with serotonin release - short-term effects and low frequencies,
associated with endorphin release - cumulative effects are optimal for pain
relief.

2. Exercise: Exercise conditioning and stretching can improve certain pains with
stretching such as painful, stiff muscles and joints by increasing blood flow to
these areas. Walking and weight baring exercises are beneficial for improving
strength , bone density and circulation. Restoring movement and normal function
to an injured area is critical. Learn to stretch to improve your flexibility.

3. Proper Diet: A poor diet can be a nutrition zapper that robs the body of
proper vitamins, mineral and sufficient amino acids that are important for
energy product. A balance of fresh vegetables, complexed carbs, whole grain, as
well as, fruits, nuts, seeds and protein are very important for maintaining
proper energy levels. A diet consisting mainly of plant based foods like fruits
and NON-night shade vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes...) have shown
great results with those suffering from arthritis. Avoiding fried foods and
refined carbohydrates are a must. Difficulties with the digestive tract such as
thirst, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, acid reflux are symptoms of poor
assimilation of food. The delicate balance of our digestive system can affect
our whole system in so many ways. Decrease your intake of excess protein,
carbonated drinks and coffee.

4. Reducing Stress: People who have things in their lives under control will be
better pain managers than people who don't. Recent research confirms the
importance of psychological attitude on arthritis pain relief. It is no secret,
if you are hurting and you are tense, you hurt more. Look at your attitudes and
emotions. The mental and emotional aspects of healing have a direct connection
between you and what you are experiencing. A positive mental and emotional
attitude and can be created and maintained by focusing on your purpose for being
healed. Idle joints can become painful joints. If you focus on pain, it hurts
more, but if you are doing things that are important to you, or focused on you,
then you are less likely to feel it.

5. Supplementing: Take additional vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements can
help to supplement major deficiencies. Deficiencies of vitamins and minerals in
our diet have proven to be the culprit of much pain and suffering. We often do
not get enough of the required amounts of calcium, magnesium, selenium, zinc and
essential fatty acids. Asian herbal formulas have also been an extremely
important key to restoring balance in the body.

6. Work with herbal remedies: There are great herbal solutions to relieving pain
naturally, improving circulation, elimination and assimilation. There are great
herbs to help you sleep and regulate your entire body system. The herbal
remedies are even more helpful when the arthritis is further divided into
location of pain, worse with cold/damp or damp heat or if it is more affected by
wind. (see Chinese medicine).

7. Topcial Care: 89% of patients suffer from some type of morning stiffness.
Apply a muscle ointment at night before going to bed will relax the musculature
around the joiuts, decrease inflammation as it gives you a psychological boost
as well. This boost tends to help people with arthritis to feel much better all
day if they aren't stiff when they wake up in the morning. Consider such
topicals as Zeel, Chinese massage oil, UI Oil, White Flower Oil, Taoist Oil or
Wind Cream.

8. Touch Therapies: have shown helpful in studies on arthritis. Massage therapy
improves circulation and joint mobility. Massage strengthens the immune system,
treats musculoskeletal problems, reduces blood pressure, helps relieve
tension-related headaches and effects of eye-strain. Massage therapy promotes
deeper and easier breathing, improves circulation of blood and movement of lymph
fluids. Osteopathic or chiropractic treatments are recommended to relieve any
pressures that may be hindering circulation and decreasing eliminations. This is
vital , your spine and its nerve pathways can have an enormous influence on how
you feel and the functioning of your body.

9. Hydrotherapy: has a number of uses. Warm water will relax spasm, while cool
can decrease inflammation. Studies have shown that floating in specially
designed floatation tanks, also known as isolation tanks, can relieve arthritic
pain. Moist heat can be helpful when feeling stiff or having pain. Hydrotherapy
has been useful in treating such conditions as muscular strains and sprains,
muscular fatigue, joint swelling and arthritis.

10. Improving Elimination results when food moves too slowly through the
gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Poor elimination is usually diagnosed when bowel
movements occur fewer than three times per week on an ongoing basis. Other signs
occur when the stool is hard, dry or there is excessive straining. Many people
don't realize that the gastrointestinal tract contains the largest immune system
in the body. The immune system is the body's natural defense against foreign
invaders, and it is somehow altered in people who have these conditions. Some
researchers believe that the long-lasting inflammation found in the intestines
of people with IBD damages the bowel, which in turn may allow bacteria to enter
the damaged bowel wall and circulate through the blood stream. The body's
reaction to these bacteria may cause other problems including inflammation in
the joints and/or spine, skin sores and inflammation of the eyes. Start with a
heathy detox. Detoxifying is the process of releasing accumulated toxins and
waste products that build up throughout our system. Our body does much of the
detoxification process through urination, defecation and perspiration. As our
bodies age and our immune systems weaken from illness, poor diet and/or
addictive substances, we sometimes need to give our system an extra helping
hand. That is why conscious detoxing is a great way back to optimum health.

Andrew Pacholyk, MS. Not only is it a phrase from the 60's associated with peace and the hippie movement, I find the phrase, itself empowering! So this week I am going to explore the nature of "Flower Power"!

The essence of flowers is a subtle, aromatic and volatile liquid extracted from the flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, bark and roots of herbs, bushes, shrubs and trees through distillation. It is a form of vibrational healing, which works on many levels. Flower remedies are homeopathic essences, which benefit a specific mental and emotional state. Below is a small sampling of the power of flowers, with there color, qualities and patterns of imbalance they treat:

Agrimony: (Agrimonia eupatoria) (yellow)
Positive qualities: Emotional honesty, acknowledging and working with emotional pain, obtaining true inner peace.
Patterns of Imbalance: Anxiety hidden by a mask of cheerfulness; denial and avoidance of emotional pain, addictive behavior to anesthetize feelings.

Beech: (Fagus sylvatica) (red)
Positive qualities: Tolerance, acceptance of others' differences and imperfections, seeing the good within each person and situation.
Patterns of Imbalance: Criticalness, judgmental attitudes, intolerance; perfectionist expectations of others; over sensitivity to one's social and physical environment.

Cherry Plum: (Prunus cerasifera) (white)
Positive qualities: Spiritual surrender and trust, feeling guided and protected by a Higher Power; balance and equanimity despite extreme stress.
Patterns of Imbalance: Fear of losing control, or of mental and emotional breakdown; desperate, destructive impulses.

Clematis: (Clematis vitalba) (white)
Positive qualities: Awake, focused presence; manifesting inspiration in practical life; embodiment.
Patterns of Imbalance: Avoidance of the present by daydreaming; other-worldly and impractical ideals.

Elm: (Ulmus procera) (reddish brown)
Positive qualities: Joyous service, faith and confidence to complete one's task
Patterns of Imbalance: Overwhelmed by duties and responsibilities, feeling unequal to the task required.

Gentian: (Gentiana amarella) (purple)
Positive qualities: Perseverance, confidence; Especially close to my heart, helping woman get pregnant naturally has been my specialty for many years. This week, I will review the many ways to help increase fertility in both woman and men.

In man, symptoms of infertility may have some signs of hormonal problems such as changes in hair growth or sexual function. The quality, quantity, morphology and motility of a man's sperm is also looked at.

In men, symptoms of low testosterone may show as signs of hormonal issues such as changes in hair growth or sexual function. The quality, quantity, morphology and motility of a man's sperm is also looked at.

Physical examination and routine laboratory tests for men include:

1. Hormone testing: a blood test is done to determine the level of testosterone and other male hormones.

2. Physical examination: includes the genitals and questions about medical history, illnesses and disabilities, medications and sexual habits.

3. Semen analysis: is the most important test for men. Your doctor will ask for one or more semen samples. The laboratory determines the number of sperm present and any abnormalities in the morphology and motility of the sperm. Sperm counts can fluctuate from one sample to the next.

4. Ultrasound: a transrectal and scrotal ultrasound can help the doctor look for evidence of conditions such as retrograde ejaculation and ejaculatory duct obstruction.

Factors that may decrease sperm:
Illness
Excessive Caffeine
Stress
Excessive alcohol consumption
Street and certain Prescription Drugs
Some over the counter medications
Injury to the testicles
Blockage in the Vas Deferens
Excessive Heat to the testicles
Vitamin Deficiencies
Varicocele:a varicose enlargement of the veins of the spermatic cord that may cause infertility through a significant decrease in the quality and quantity of the sperm.

Normal Semen Values
Volume (mL) 2.0
Sperm Concentration (million/mL) 20
Motility (%) 50
Forward Progression (0-4) 3
Normal Morphology (%) (WHO) 30
Normal Morphology (%) (Strict) 14
Total Sperm Count (million) 40
Total Motile Sperm (million) 20
Total Functional Sperm (million) 6

This is a glossary of terms your doctor may talk about or will show you on lab test results:
Aspermia: No semen ejaculated
Hematospermia: Blood present in semen
Leucocytospermia: White blood cells present in semen
Azoospermia: No spermatozoa found in semen
Normozoospermia: Normal semen parameters
Oligozoospermia: Low sperm concentration
Asthenozoospermia: Poor motility and/or forward progression
Teratozoospermia: Reduced percentage of morphologicall normal sperm
Necrozoospermia: No live sperm in semen
Globozoospermia: Round headed acrosome-less sperm

A variety of factors can result in low testosterone, including infertility in men. Approximately 25% of infertility is directly due to the male partner. Low sperm count or anatomical abnormalities are often the two main reasons for male issues.

Several other factors can contribute to this including exposure to excessive heat or fever, radiation, toxins, alcohol consumption or acute injury or testicular injury. Anatomical abnormalities such as an endocrine disorders or varicocele, a diluted vein of the spermatic cord can also cause a problem. Varicocele can be treated successfully with surgery. Environmental exposures, smoking, and use of recreational drugs (e.g., marijuana, cocaine, hashish) may reduce sperm count or cause abnormal sperm morphology. If there are no anatomical abnormalities then here are ways to improve sperm:

1. Reduce Your Heat: Men with low sperm counts are often advised to optimize the temperature of the testes as sperm production is slightly lower than body temperature. The reason the testes hang away from the body in the scrotum. Remedy this by wearing looser “bikini-style underwear, do not use your lap top directly on the knees and avoid frequent use of hot tubs and steam .

2. Drink Less Alcohol : Excess alcohol consumption is associated with a decrease in the percentage of normal sperm.

3. Eat More Organic: A study done with members of the Organic Farmers's Association suggesting that organically grown foods may enhance sperm count. Sperm count was more than twice as high in these men as in a control group of workers.

4. Get Acupuncture: Acupuncture was used on 28 men twice a week for 5 weeks and compared to men who received no treatment. Following acupuncture, a statistically significant increase in the percentage and number of sperm in the total ejaculate was observed (in comparison with controls), with improvements in the shape. Also progressive motility in ejaculate increased from 44.5% to 55% following acupuncture treatment.

5. Take Your Supplements:

This is one of my favorite perscriptions I give my male patients. These three supplements are only natural. One is plant based, the other is a natural steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and the third is an omega fatty acid. They must be taken together, twice a day for 30 days. The results will be so great that you will want to continue this protocol, but I would only recommend doing this only 6 months apart (twice a year).

1. DIM (diindolylmethane) is a plant compound called an indole and has been shown to help regulate and promote a more efficient metabolism of estrogen, and an optimal ratio of estrogen metabolites. DIM balances estrogen levels, promoting health and well-being. This powerful phytonutrient is found in broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussels sprouts, unlike other phytonutrients like soy isoflavones, has no hormonal properties in itself.

2. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a natural steroid hormone, one of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands. After being secreted by the adrenal glands, it circulates in the bloodstream as DHEA-sulfate (DHEAS) and is converted as needed into other hormones. DHEA is chemically similar to testosterone and estrogen and is easily converted into those hormones. DHEA production peaks in early adulthood and declines in production with age in both men and women. Therefore, many diseases which correlate with age also correlate with low levels of DHEA production. Standard dosage is 100 mg twice a day.

3. Fish Oil: Take 2,000 mg of rich, omega 3 fish oil, in doses of 1,000 mg, twice a day.

To increase testosterone levels, consider taking DHEA 100 mg in divided dosage (50 mg, twice a day) with DIM-plus 60 capsule size (one capsule, twice a day for a total of 100 mg) for a total of two capsules per day along with a "good fat" such as flaxseed or fish oil 1,000 mg, twice a day (2,000 mg total per day).

Another favorite combination of supplements I recommend for long term use are my Male Performance formula. Take this all natural herbal combination, two pills, twice a day. Along with this, take 2,000 mg of L-Arginine (one of the best male amino acids) in divided doses (1,000 mg), twice a day. (Take up to 3 months at a time. Take a break for a month and then go back on the 3 month regime.)

Vitamin C research suggests it may prevent sperm from "clumping" together and that it increases sperm count. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione - research shows that these and other antioxidants may improve sperm quality. Dose: 1,000 mg twice a day.

Vitamin E supplementation with this antioxidant has been shown to increase sperm motility and to enhance the ability of the sperm to penetrate the egg in test-tube studies. Dose: 400 IU daily. Talk to your doctor prior to starting Vitamin E, particularly if you are currently taking aspirin or other blood thinners.

Selenium: Dose: 200 mcg daily. Improves sperm motility.

Coenzyme Q10: Take 10 mg daily. Increases sperm count and motility.

Zinc is an essential nutrient for proper sperm production. A deficiency may result in lowered testosterone levels.. The usual recommended dosage of zinc is about 15 to 30 mg daily, coupled with 1 mg of copper for balance. Too much zinc can be toxic. Do not exceed a dose of 15 to 30 mg daily This mineral is found in great amounts in the outer layer of sperm and plays an important role in the production of the hormone testosterone.

Vitamin B12: Take 1000 mcg daily. A B-12 deficiency reduces sperm motility and sperm count. Even if no deficiency exists, B-12 supplementation may help men with a sperm count of less than 20 million per milliliter or a motility rate of less than 50% Zinc and B Vitamins (B6, B12, and folic acid) are critical nutrients in the male reproductive system for proper hormone metabolism, sperm formation and motility.

L-Arginine (Kidney Yang tonic) especially enhance sperm count. Studies indicate that this amino acid may improve sperm motility. Take 4 gr daily. Needed to produce sperm. If the sperm count is below 10 million per ml, arginine probably will not provide any benefit.

L-Carnitine (Yin and Blood tonic) especially enhance sperm count. Researchers have found that L-carnitine is found in much greater amounts in sperm tissues than other cells. Preliminary studies suggest that L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine may be able to stimulate sperm motility in certain situations. The role of L-carnitine on sperm maturation and sperm quality however, is still unclear. Several clinical studies have evaluated the effect of L-carnitine on men with a low sperm count, a reduction/loss in sperm movement, or men with both conditions. These studies have evaluated only small numbers of men who took oral carnitine supplements for varying lengths of time. Some patients enrolled in these studies experienced increased sperm counts and/or increased sperm motility. Take 3-4 grams daily. Required for normal sperm function.

Flaxseed oil: Take 1 tbsp daily. Is a source of essential fatty acids.

Fish Oil: Take 2,000 mg of rich, omega 3 fish oil, in doses of 1,000 mg, twice a day.

Ginseng: increases production of testosterone and helps with sperm production. Avoid if you have high blood pressure or Yin deficiency (with heat signs).

The Problem with Low Motility and Morphology

Guaifenesin (natural source is Beechwood) can improve motility by thinning out the semen allowing for sperm to swim up stream easier. Vitamin C and Zinc can also help.

If your morphology is less than 30%, consider Pycnogenol is the patented trade name for a water extract of the bark of the French maritime pine ( Pinus pinaster ssp. atlantica ), which is grown in coastal south-west France. Pycnogenol contains oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) as well as several other bioflavonoids. Preliminary human data suggests that supplementation of Pycnogenol may lower glucose levels and improve endothelial function.

Nutrition

The importance of a healthy diet cannot be overstated. Our amazing machine, the reproductive system requires the proper vitamins and minerals. Nutritional deficiencies can impair hormone function, inhibit sperm production, and contribute to the production of abnormal sperm. If you can not muster up the ability to get on a routine and eat a diet rich in green vegetables and colorful fruits, then at the very least, take a good multi-vitamin daily!

Include consumption of legumes and soy (which are a high in phytoestrogens and phytosterols).

Eat a natural foods diet that focuses on fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, poultry, legumes, nuts, and seeds. No celery or cucumbers.

Drink 1/2 of body weight in ounces of water daily (e.g., a 150 lb man would drink 75 oz of water).

Pumpkin seeds are naturally high in zinc and essential fatty acids, as well as olive oil, which are vital to healthy functioning of the male reproductive system.

Eat 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day of pumpkin seeds to help maintain a healthy reproductive system.

Avoid excessive environmental estrogen and dietary sources of free radicals including saturated fats, hydrogenated oils and trans fatty acids.

Anti-hypertensives, anti-neoplastics and anti-inflammatory drugs, can impair sperm production.

Eliminate processed and refined foods (e.g., white flour), junk food, sugars, alcohol, and caffeine.

Andrew Pacholyk, MS, L.Ac
http://peacefulmind.com/infertility.htm
Therapies for healing
mind, body, spirit
